Section 1 The General Section |
The 2003 update of the 1998 edition of Section 1: the General Section describes the full range of tests currently available. An updated overview of the theory on which Raven’s Progressive Matrices and Vocabulary Scales are based and an account of their development and background is also included. There is a discussion of the range of audiences - test “users” - to whom the Sections of the Manual are addressed. |
Section 2 The Coloured Progressive Matrices. |
The Coloured Progressive Matrices Section contains data on the comparability between the Parallel and Classic versions of the test as well as additional normative data. The Coloured Progressive Matrices was last updated in 2008. |
Section 3 The Standard Progressive Matrices, including the Parallel and Plus versions |
The 2004 update of Year 2000 edition of Section 3: the Standard Progressive Matrices describes the procedures used to develop the Parallel and Plus versions of the tests, a cross-validation of the item analysis, and additional norms for, the SPM+. Procedures for measuring change (eg in response to drug treatments or education) in a meaningful way and detecting the faking of low scores (eg in connection with insurance claims) are also included. The discussion of the test’s contributions to our understanding of cognitive ability, its consequences, and its development has also been extended. |
Section 4 The Advanced Progressive Matrices |
The 1998 edition of Section 4: the Advanced Progressive Matrices, contains an extended discussion of the construct validity of the RPM, situating that discussion in the context of wider models of intelligence and competence. This understanding of what is being measured greatly facilitates the appropriate use of the test in occupational settings |
Section 5 The Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale |
The Manual Section dealing with Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale was radically revised for 1998 and contains a discussion of the use of the Short Form of the test. It reviews the extensive evidence supporting the theoretical framework in which both eductive and reproductive abilities (but especially the latter) are based and presents an illuminating discussion of the multiple uses and limitations of vocabulary tests in general. The sections dealing with the clinical applications of the Vocabulary Scales have been extended to incorporate a framework for classifying abnormal responses. |
Section 6 The Crichton Vocabulary Scale. |
The section of the Manual which deals with the Crichton Vocabulary Scale (which is designed for use with the Coloured Progressive Matrices), was last revised in 1988 … But see below for the standardisation by Raven, Rust, and Squire in 2008. |
Section 7 Normative, Reliability Studies and Reference Data |
Normative, Reliability Studies and References to All Sections. The print version of this is no longer available, having been superseded by a computerised version around 1998. Unfortunately, this has disappeared into cyberspace.
Nevertheless, links to some sections of the computerised bibliography are available on the eyeonsociety website
. http://www.eyeonsociety.co.uk/resources/bibliography/1935-2002.xlsx This lists author, title, date, journal, and page nos of all articles known to us, but there are no abstracts. http://www.eyeonsociety.co.uk/resources/bibliography/2003-Biblio-DatBas.pdf Consists of 3090 pages listing author, title, date, publication name and volume no. No abstracts. http://www.eyeonsociety.co.uk/resources/bibliography/APM-REPORT.pdf This, like the other “Reports”, listed below contains brief abstracts as well as author, date, and publication details of all studies known to us in which the APM was used. This one runs to 220 pages. http://www.eyeonsociety.co.uk/resources/bibliography/CPM-REPORT.pdf Similar to above but relates to CPM http://www.eyeonsociety.co.uk/resources/bibliography/MHV-REPORT.pdf http://www.eyeonsociety.co.uk/resources/bibliography/RPM-REPORT.pdf 473 pages. Includes abstracts. http://www.eyeonsociety.co.uk/resources/bibliography/SPMHV-REPORT.pdf http://www.eyeonsociety.co.uk/resources/bibliography/SPM-REPORT.pdf 1359 pages. In addition to these computerised resources, a scanned-in copy of the References section of the last (1995) edition of Section 7 is also available. This is important because the only source of all references to publications cited in all Sections of the Manual was Section 7. Without it, it is impossible to trace the citations in the Manual.
